Jewish settlers desecrate Hebron mosque and graves

Well we usually hear about Jewish graves through Europe being desecrated by facsist now it seems that Jewish Settlers (majority who had left the same parts of Europe) are doing what facsists had done to their communities!

Taken from Google News, By AFP

HEBRON, West Bank — Jewish settlers angry at an Israeli court order for their eviction from a house in Hebron desecrated a mosque and tombs in the flashpoint West Bank City before dawn on Thursday, witnesses said.

The settlers scrawled "Mohammed is a pig" and "Death to the Arabs" on the front of a mosque and drew the Israeli emblem, the Star of David, on several gravestones in a Muslim cemetery, the witnesses said.
The mosque and cemetery both lie near the Hebron house where dozens of hardline Jewish settlers are defying the order by the Israeli High Court setting last Wednesday a deadline for them to leave or face eviction.
Israeli soldiers are on round-the-clock patrol in the tense neighbourhood.
The ruling, which was slammed by settler leaders, follows a series of violent clashes between Israeli security forces and hardline Jews seeking to erect unauthorised outposts in the West Bank, which Israel occupied in 1967.
The court rejected an appeal by two right-wing organisations against a government order to evacuate the Hebron house, which the settlers claim they had purchased from a Palestinian, who denies selling the house.
The four-storey house at the centre of the dispute was occupied in March 2007 by dozens of hardline Jewish settlers who have dubbed it "the house of peace".
The court ruling said the settlers "should turn to the appropriate legal bodies to prove their ownership over the house and refrain from taking the law into their own hands by occupying the property against the will of its owner."
The settler representatives claimed the house had been bought for 700,000 dollars, but Palestinian Faez Rajabi said he had documents proving he was the legal owner and that the deal had never been completed.
While the court ruling said there were "contradictions and queries" in Rajabi's claims, it also said that documents presented by the settlers in a bid to show ownership "were found by police investigators to be forged."

Israel Builds Museum on Muslim Graves

Taken from Islamonline, Thu. Oct. 30, 2008

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM — An Israeli court ruling allowing the construction of a Jewish museum over graves of some companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in Al-Quds is sparking a controversy.

"Israeli is declaring a global war on Muslims and Arabs," Sheikh Raed Salah, leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, told a press conference on Thursday, October 30.

"A general of the [prophet's] Companions is buried in this cemetery."

Sheikh Salah noted that thousands of other Muslims have been buried in the cemetery, putting the number at 70,000 thousands until 1948.

Israel's High Court on Wednesday, October 29, rejected an appeal by two Muslim groups to halt the building of a Jewish museum on the site of a Muslim cemetery in central Al-Quds.

The court argued that the cemetery has been in public use since the municipality authorities put a parking lot over a small section of the graveyard in the 1960s.

It claimed that a proposal put forward by the museum planners to rebury the bones or cover the graves was "satisfactory" to resolve the issue.

The court said the construction of the museum, halted in 2006 after human remains were discovered during the digging, can resume immediately.

The Mufti of Al-Quds, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein, said the verdict was a "grave decision which harms the Muslim holy sites."

He described the construction of the $250-million museum by a Los Angeles-based Jewish group as "act of aggression."

Help Plea

Sheikh Salah appealed to the Muslim world to intervene to halt the construction on the Muslim cemetery.

"We have sent messages to the Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference to stop this crime."

The Muslim leader said the court verdict was part of the Israeli policies to judaize the holy city.
"But we will not give up our rights."

Israel captured Al-Quds in the 1967 war and later annexed the holy city, in a move not recognized by the international community.

The city is home to Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest shrine and the first Qiblah [direction Muslims take during prayers].

Al-Quds is also home to some of the holiest Christian worship places, including the Jerusalem Church and the Greek Orthodox Church.

Archmandrite Atallah Hanna also criticized the Israeli court ruling.

"This is the true face of the occupation," he told the same press conference.

The Christian clergy reaffirmed the unity of Palestinian Muslims and Christians in the face of Israeli aggressions.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder in the same trench."

Orthodox Jewish youths burn New Testaments in Or Yehuda

Taken from Haaretz, Israel
By The Associated Press, 20/05/2008

Orthodox Jews set fire to hundreds of copies of the New Testament in the latest act of violence against Christian missionaries in the Holy Land. Or Yehuda Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon said missionaries recently entered a neighborhood in the predominantly religious town of 34,000 in central Israel, distributing hundreds of New Testaments and missionary material.

After receiving complaints, Aharon said, he got into a loudspeaker car last Thursday and drove through the neighborhood, urging people to turn over the material to Jewish religious students who went door to door to collect it. "The books were dumped into a pile and set afire in a lot near a synagogue," he said.

The newspaper Maariv reported Tuesday that hundreds of yeshiva students took part in the book-burning. But Aharon told The Associated Press that only a few students were present, and that he was not there when the books were torched.

"Not all of the New Testaments that were collected were burned, but hundreds were," he said.

He said he regretted the burning of the books, but called it a commandment to burn materials that urge Jews to convert.

"I certainly don't denounce the burning of the booklets, he said. I denounce those who distributed the booklets."

Jews worship from the Old Testament, including the Five Books of Moses and the writings of the ancient prophets. Christians revere the Old Testament as well as the New Testament, which contains the ministry of Jesus.

Calev Myers, an attorney who represents Messianic Jews, or Jews who accept Jesus as their savior, demanded in an interview with Army Radio that all those involved be put on trial. He estimated there were 10,000 Messianic Jews, who are also known as Jews for Jesus, in Israel.

Police had no immediate comment.

Israeli authorities and Orthodox Jews frown on missionary activity aimed at Jews, though in most cases it is not illegal. Still, the concept of a Jew burning books is abhorrent to many in Israel because of the association with Nazis torching piles of Jewish books during the Holocaust of World War II.

Earlier this year, the teenage son of a prominent Christian missionary was seriously wounded when a package bomb delivered to the family's West Bank home went off in his hands.

Last year, arsonists burst into a Jerusalem church used by Messianic Jews and set the building on fire, raising suspicions that Jewish extremists were behind the attack. No one claimed responsibility, but the same church was burned down 25 years ago by ultra-Orthodox Jewish extremists.

Woman, 38, charged with having sex with her young sons

Another incest incident. This sickening act seems to be happening in most part of the world these days...

Taken from Harretz, Israel, 13 April 2008
By Haaretz Service

The Be'er Sheva District Court on Sunday indicted a 38-year-old woman from the southern town of Netivot who allegedly had sexual relations with her two sons, 9 and 11.

The defendant is a religious woman and a divorcee. Her children were taken from her home last year by court order and put into boarding schools and foster care, upon recommendation of a social worker involved in their case.

One of the children, 11, was transferred to a boarding school in B'nei Barak, where he exhibited sexual behavior inappropriate for his age. When confronted, the boy told school counselors that his mother had forced him to have sex with her on one of the occasions he had come to visit her last year.

When arrested by police, the woman said she had committed the act as revenge against her former husband.

The charges state that the woman lay on her bed naked, with only her head covered and forced her children to undress and have sex with her. She then did the same thing with her other son, according to the indictment.

The woman is also suspected of watching pornographic films with her children. The Southern District Prosecution has requested that the woman remain in policy custody until the end of proceedings on the grounds that she could be a danger to her children.

Rabbis warn Bush: Annapolis will bring destruction to US

Taken from YnetNews, Israel, 06.11.07
By Neta Sela

Group of right-wing rabbis writes open letter to US president demanding he cancel Annapolis summit or risk provoking 'wrath of the almighty.' Rabbis assert Katrina disaster a result of America's support of 2005 disengagement, say California fires a warning

A fringe group of prominent ultranationalist rabbis issued a harshly-worded letter to United States President George W. Bush earlier this week, warning him that the upcoming Annapolis peace conference would bring destruction upon America.

The rabbis evoke their previous prediction in 2005, when they published an open letter to Bush in the New York Times, demanding the US rescind its support of the disengagement plan.

"We wrote to President Bush, a man who believes in the Bible, to warn him against the terrible danger to which he is exposing his country by hosting such a conference," said Rabbi Meir Druckman, one of signatories to the letter.

"The land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel. God punishes anyone who coerces Israel to give up its land," he said.

"There is no doubt the New Orleans flood from the Katrina hurricane was God's punishment for evicting the settlements," said Druckman, "with hundreds of thousands left homeless, hundreds killed or wounded and billions of dollars sent down the drain – can we really ignore God's hand collecting an eye for an eye?"

The disengagement from Gaza and the northern West Bank was completed August 23rd, 2005 – which was also the date Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas.

"Despite those consequences, yet again we find ourselves facing an initiative to expel Jews from Judea and Samaria and cede their cities to terror organizations. And once again the patrons of the event are President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

"This time the Almighty is warning the US in advance: if the plague of water was not enough now he shall send flames. While hundreds of thousands of families have already fled the terrible fires in California, and we ask you, will you really forge ahead with this malevolent plan?" added Druckman.

The letter was authored by SOS Israel, a right-wing movement which earlier this year distributed citations to IDF soldiers who disobeyed orders and refused to take part in the disengagement.

The rabbis urged Bush's administration to back down from the current direction of the peace process, saying that not an inch of Israeli land should be ceded. "Be merciful to yourselves and the beloved America and its citizens. Lay down the hand you have raised against the Creator in war. Help the people of Israel fight without compromise against the terrorists who rise against it, and then, with a pure heart, you will truly be able to pray: May God bless America," the rabbis said.

Among the rabbis who signed the letter are several leading religious figures, including Rabbis Dov Wolfa, Yekutiel Rap, Gedalia Axelrod as well as the chief rabbi of Kiryat Arba and Hebron, Dov Lior and the son of former Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Yaakov Yosef.

This is facism at its worst. Who would of thought that Rabbies would be quoting the bible to advise the president of the United States on this Christian duties to do unChristian acts? Has ne not done enough damage?

As someone said in a talkback on the Ynetwebsite: Why dont the God of this lunatic rabbis punish the actual people that harm Israel and the Jews, ie the arabs If your God is so good, why then dont he bring hurricane to the Palestinians or fire to Hizbalaah or flooding to the Syrians or whatever to the Iranians, why does you cleaver God punishes the Americans? Your way of thinking is so stupid it is beyond belief, especially rabbi Gedalia and rabbi Yekutiel . By Avi , Israel (11.06.07)

We must bomb Iran, says US Republican guru

Taken from Daily Telegraph, UK, 27/10/2007
By Toby Harnden in New York

A senior foreign policy adviser to the Republican frontrunner Rudy Giuliani has urged that Iran be bombed using cruise missiles and "bunker busters" to set back Teheran’s nuclear programme by at least five years.

Podhoretz is a founder of neoconservatism

The tough message at a time of crisis between the United States and Iraq was delivered by Norman Podhoretz, one of the founders of neoconservatism, who has also imparted his stark advice personally to a receptive President George W. Bush.

"None of the alternatives to military action - negotiations, sanctions, provoking an internal insurrection - can possibly work," said Mr Podhoretz."They’re all ways of evading the terrible choice we have to make which is to either let them get the bomb or to bomb them."In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Mr Podhoretz said he was certain that bombing raids could be successful."People I’ve talked to have no doubt we could set it back five or 10 years. There are those who believe we can get the underground facilities as well with these highly sophisticated bunker-busting munitions."

Although Mr Podhoretz said he did not speak for Mr Giuliani, the former New York mayor whom he briefs daily appears to have embraced at least the logic of his hard-line views.

During a visit to London last month, Mr Giuliani said Iran should be given "an absolute assurance that, if they get to the point that they are going to become a nuclear power, we will prevent them or we will set them back five or 10 years".

Mr Podhoretz said: "I was very pleased to see him say that. I was even surprised he went that far. I’m sure some of his political people were telling him to go slow ... I wouldn’t advise any candidate to come out and say we have to bomb - it’s not a prudent thing to say at this stage of the campaign."

But Mr Podhoretz’s 77 years and his position as a pre-eminent conservative foreign policy intellectual means he can not only think the unthinkable but say the unsayable.

"My role has simply been to say what I think," he said, explaining that he takes part in weekly conference calls and is in daily email contact with the Giuliani campaign.

He is the most eminent of a clutch of uncompromisingly hawkish aides assembled by Mr Giuliani. They include Daniel Pipes, who opposes a Palestinian state and believes America should "inspire fear, not affection", and Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official who has argued that Condoleezza Rice’s diplomacy is "dangerous" and signals American "weakness" to Teheran.

"Does Rudy agree with me?" Mr Podhoretz asked rhetorically. "I don’t know and I don’t wish to know." But he added that "Rudy’s view of the war is very similar to mine."

Mr Podhoretz’s thesis is that the war on terror is in fact World War Four and that the 42-year-long Cold War should be more properly described as World War Three.

Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest honour, by President George W. Bush in 2004, Mr Podhoretz later sought a rare one-on-on audience with the US commander-in-chief. They met in New York’s Waldorf Astoria hotel in the spring.

The author of the recent World War IV: the Long Struggle Against Islamofacsism spent about 35 minutes outlining his case for air strikes against Iran as Mr Bush’s then chief adviser Karl Rove took notes.

"Whether I had any effect on him I truly don’t know but I sure tried my best to persuade him," he said.

"He was very cordial. He was warm. He listened. He occasionally asked a question as I made the case but he was truly poker faced."

Mr Podhoretz left the meeting unshaken in his belief that Mr Bush would attack Iran before he leaves office.

"The spirit of the questions was not to try to refute or contradict what I was saying. I didn’t get any negative vibes."

He said that now "the debate [over Iran] is secretly over and the people who are against military action are now preparing to make the case that we can live with an Iranian bomb".

Neither Mr Bush nor Mr Giuliani, however, would countenance Teheran acquiring a nuclear weapon and either one would authorise military action once they were convinced Iran had passed the point of no return with its uranium enrichment programme.

"Unlike a ground invasion where you’ve got to mass hundreds of thousands of troops, it takes six months and everybody knows you’re mobilising, with air strikes, we’ve got three carriers in the region and a lot of submarines," Mr Podhoretz said.

"I would say it would take five minutes. You’d wake up one morning and the strikes would have been ordered and carried out during the night. All the president has to do is say go."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what do we know about this neo-con warmonger? Podhoretz was said to be born on January 16, 1930, in a working-class section of Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish immigrants Julius and Helen Podhoretz. He received an A.B. degree in literature and criticism in 1950 at Columbia University and concurrently earned a degree in Hebrew literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary. I wonder if he is a member of AIPAC?

Why is he wanting to bomb Iran? (apart from the obvious reasons) Have we forgotten what happened in Iraq - Where were the Weapons of Mass Destruction? The only WMD were in the hands of the US military as it destroyed Iraqi infrastructure when there was no threat from the Iraqi regime of Saddan Hussein. The only chemical weapons used in Iraq came from US troops against Iraqi civilians. So do we really want to bomb Iran? WHY NOT ASK THE EXPERTS? Dr Mohamed ElBaradei of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an inter-governmental organization under the auspices of the United Nations is such an expert. He has repeatedly stated that Iran does not have any Nuclear weapons. Who do we believe an expert or a crazy warmonger?

There are currently 189 states party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty including Iran. Countries that don't abide by the rules are the likes of India, Pakistan, and Israel - all so called friends of the USA. Who is the only country in the world to use real Weapons of Mass Destruction? Well it would be easy to ask the citizens of the city of Hiroshima unfortunately I belive most of those are all dead.

With regards to the crazy Podhoretz, Dr ElBaradei gave one of his sternest warnings against using military action against Iran -Referring to "the extreme people who have extreme views" he said: "...You do not want to give additional argument to some of the 'new crazies' who want to say let us go and bomb Iran" -

SO with Iran NOT having anu Nuclear weapons and experts believe it will take 3 to 8 years to make any weapons why are we so worried? And even if they did have any weapons so what? (has Pakistan ever attacked India and vice versa even though they are perseved to be enemies?) Who are Iran going to attack considering the other Superpower that exists in the Middle East? (It was only because brave Mordechai Vanunu exposed this Israel secret in the Sunday times in 1986) It is belived Isreal has over 200 Nuclear weapons.

So my queston is shouldn't we be reducig our own weapons before dictating to others what they could do? Shouldn't we trying to get Pakistan, India and Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty? The only threat to the world comes from these neo-cons, these fools should be banished to Siberia, their only goal is to make money and they will do whatever it takes to achieve that.

Recalled: The Sabra Shatila Massacre

Well, I waited a few days for the world media to recall the massacre that took place at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps 25 years ago, and you guessed it - little or no coverage at all. So I had to rely on the Arab media...

Sabra Shatila recalled

Taken from Al-Jazeera news Agency, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2007
By Iman Azzi in Beirut, Lebanon

Twenty-five years after surviving the massacre at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Beirut, Jamila Khalife still mourns family members who were killed at the hands of Phalangist Lebanese forces.

Lebanon is marking the 25th anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre [AFP]

Her life since then, she says, has been a daily reminder of the horrors she witnessed as a 16-year-old Palestinian refugee from Jaffa living in the camps at the height of the 1975-90 Lebanese civil war.

"This was my father," said Khalife, pointing to a black and white photo of a man lying face down in a narrow street.

"They shot him in the head."

Three of her relatives were also killed.

"After it was over, on the way to find my mother at the nearby hospital, I saw a woman on the street, her intestines were spilling out. She died holding her baby," Khalife recounted as her own daughter, Ghram (Arabic for Love), sat on her lap.

Dusk massacre
In September 1982, Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) fighters, evacuated from their Beirut barracks and the Israeli army, surrounded the refugee camps.

About 2,000 civilians were killed over the course of three days [AFP]

On the afternoon of September 16, Israeli forces allowed members of the Lebanese Forces (LF) - an offshoot of the Phalange party - into the camps allegedly to search for suspects in the slaying of Bashir Gemayel, then Lebanese president.

Gemayel, who also headed the LF, had been killed by a car bomb outside his office a day earlier, angering many of his supporters and plunging war-torn Lebanon into further chaos. Palestinian forces quickly distanced themselves from Gemayel's death, but it did not save the camps from reprisals.

Khalife says she remembers seeing both Israelis and Phalange party members inside the camps that day.

"The Israelis were wearing military uniforms. The Phalange wore jeans, normal clothes and military arm bands. They swore at us in Lebanese Arabic," she said.

Most aid organisations working in the camps in 1982 say around 2,000 civilians were killed over the course of three days.

Feigning death
Nabil Mohammad, a Palestinian refugee who lost all but one of his six siblings, said: "The Israeli military were bombing the camps and the worst case scenario was that the Israelis would come in and collect the young men so my uncle sent me away, thinking it would be safer."

Mohammad, his cousin and his cousin's wife dodged snipers as they made their way to a retirement home where his aunt worked. When the fighting had subsided and they returned to their home, they discovered that five of his siblings and his mother had been killed.

His younger brother Munir survived by feigning his death a few feet away from his mother's body.

Mohammad was only 19 when the killings took place, but every year since then he tries to keep the memories of his loved ones alive by returning to the camps, now home to 45,000 Lebanese, Palestinians and Syrians.

He remains bitter that fellow Arabs would commit what he called atrocities.

Avenging Gemayel?
But a former LF fighter, who spoke to Al Jazeera on the condition of anonymity, insisted that the Israeli military, and not the Lebanese, should shoulder full responsibility for the killings.

He said: "After Bashir Gemayel was killed, Lebanon was at a boiling state. We were angry, we were lost. We knew that something was going to happen but didn't know what."

He admitted that the LF was angered by the assassination of Gemayel but had no idea what was planned at Sabra and Shatila. The soldier, who began fighting with the LF when he was 13 in 1979, said his unit had been confined to barracks at the Beirut airport and not allowed to leave after Gemayel's murder until they were deployed around Sabra and Shatila.

"It was not the LF [who were responsible for the killings]. It was the Israeli soldiers who went inside those camps," he said.

Where is Sabra and Shatila?

But 25 years later, some Lebanese are unfamiliar with the events of Sabra and Shatila.

Elias, 20, said he had never heard of Sabra and Shatila.

"Where are Sabra and Shatila?" he asked turning to his friend. "Iraq? They never mentioned it in school."

George Hanna, 43, a resident of East Beirut, said: "It was between Christians and Palestinians during the war. I've never been there. What would I do there if I went?

"I never gave Sabra and Shatila any thought."

A quarter of a century later, some Lebanese are still unfamiliar with the massacre [AFP]

Nevertheless, Palestinians in Lebanon are determined to keep the history of the camps alive, at least for their community.

Kassem Aina, a co-ordinator for the 'Never forget Sabra and Shatila' campaign, told Al Jazeera: "We tell the children not only about the massacre of Sabra and Shatila. We tell them about all massacres from Deir Yassin to Tel Zaatar to Sabra and Shatila. I feel sad we have so many massacres in our history."

Never forget Sabra and Shatila was founded by Stefano Chiarini, an Italian journalist and activist, who passed away last February.

To mark the 25th anniversary this year, delegations from Italy, France, Spain and other nations will join Palestinian and Lebanese memorials planned for the week.

Seeking justice
The memorials mark the events at the camps, but also push for bringing perpetrators to justice.
To this day, there has been no direct accountability for the killings.

Ariel Sharon, the former Israeli prime minister, was forced to resign as defence minister after he was found both "indirectly" and "personally" responsible by the 1982 Kahane Commission of inquiry which investigated Israeli culpability in Sabra and Shatila.

LF commander Elie Hobeika, who led the incursion into the camps, received amnesty like all militia leaders following the Lebanese civil war, and went on to become a member of parliament.
He claimed he had evidence that would prove his innocence and directly implicate the Israelis, but was killed one month before he was to testify against Sharon in a case brought by camp survivors in Belgium in 2001.

This weekend, the streets of Sabra and Shatila remain densely packed with people struggling to live normally at the scene of one of Lebanon's worst modern tragedies.

Legal resolution may arrive later but on this year's anniversary the families of the victims are working to balance memories of their loved ones with the ability to move beyond the tragedy.
"You can forgive but you can never forget," said Aina.

United States: Guilty Until Proven Innocent

Taken from the Jerusalem Post, Jul. 26, 2007
By HILARY LEILA KRIEGER

Lt-Col. Stephen Abraham walked into the middle of a brewing storm when he took his place among a three-person panel of military officers in November 2004 to review whether the US had sufficient evidence to hold a foreign national as an unlawful enemy combatant at the notorious Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility.

The key factor which accounted for the prisoner's incarceration was a specific piece of information allegedly found in his pocket, Abraham recounts, not willing to give more details because of the confidential nature of the proceedings.

That information was incriminating, but also could have had an innocent origin entirely unrelated to terrorist intentions. So Abraham and the rest of the Combatant Status Review Tribunal asked the "recorder" - the officer who presents the government's case to the board - some questions about how the material got there. Finally, getting no satisfactory answers, they asked if the American investigators had asked the detainee where the information came from and why he had it.

"They hadn't even asked any of those questions - fundamental questions," he recalls. "It makes it preposterous that you would draw any conclusions."

With such little information to go on, Abraham and the rest of the panel recommended the detainee be let go. But their superiors pressured them to keep the case open, during which time the captive would continue to be held, according to Abraham. "We said [he was] not an enemy combatant. We were told to leave it open."

All of which led Abraham, an Intelligence Corps reservist, to conclude that the process was "fundamentally flawed" and "created in a way that could only lead to an incomplete picture."

He said as much in an affidavit submitted last month to the US Supreme Court, which is considering the case of detainees who maintain that they're entitled to a trial. An earlier court decision compelled the Pentagon to set up the CSRTs to review the grounds on which more than 500 individuals were being held (now that number hovers around 350).

Abraham took the extraordinary step - becoming the first member of a CSRT to speak out against the tribunal procedures - after his commander endorsed the process in a statement to a lower court.

"It was a very incomplete picture and one that could tend to lead a court to believe that the actual fulfilling of those functions was done adequately," charges Abraham, who found himself at the center of the international controversy over the operations at Guantanamo, which have seen the US deluged with criticism.

Abraham's actions have since been backed up by a federal court, which ruled last week that the government must turn over all of the evidence collected against the detainees who are suing, not just that information the recorder has presented. And on July 26, he further testified before a House committee.

When Abraham decided to speak up, breaking a code of silence that has surrounded these deliberations, it was a dangerous move, according to many observers. The 46-year-old attorney dismisses such talk. While the military has kept the names of those who serve on the CSRT secret, Abraham says he was never told not to talk about his experiences. And, he notes, "I still remain a member of the reserves… nothing has changed in my status."

But there is undeniably a certain amount of risk in saying what others aren't on a highly contentious and politically divisive issue. Abraham credits his Jewish heritage in large part for compelling him to take such as step.

"My nice Jewish mom, she's torn between being proud and already tearing the cloth," he quips.

While his mother might be the one with Jewish angst about the course Abraham has chosen, it's his father who inspired him to join the military in the first place. Unlike most of his family, Claude Kurt Abraham survived the Holocaust and made his way from Germany to America - "He came to the United States just in time to graduate high school and get drafted for Korea," as Abraham puts it.

The experience of America affected both elder and younger Abrahams. "My roots led me to join the military, they led me to reaffirm my love of this country and love of its ideals," Abraham explains. "I joined the military as a way of thanking the country for what we have and mindful of the fact that free is not a part of freedoms - there's a cost for it."

In his case, he paid with five years of active duty as an intelligence officer and 21 years - and counting - as a reservist. When September 11 hit, he found himself called up for a year of active duty as the senior terrorism analyst for the Pacific theater. He had only returned to his California law firm, where he practices small business and real-estate law, for some six months when he was informed that the army wanted him for another tour, a half-year stint connected to the boards reviewing detainees at Guantanamo.

During the time between Abraham's first and second post-9/11 tours, the story of America's War on Terror had become as much about US actions as those of its enemies. Particular scrutiny had been and continues to be paid to the military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, which is being used to hold men accused of belonging to al-Qaida and the Taliban.

Though Abraham spent most of his second tour in Washington, he visited Guantanamo on one occasion and found it "spartan" and "isolated." "I would not like to spend a year or two in Guantanamo," he says. "It's not a fun place."

At the same time, he notes that even within the continental United States worse holding facilities exist, and "you have the worst of the worst. How do you hold these people?"

The unique difficulties in housing an enemy that represents no country and ferreting out information that could be crucial to preventing mass casualties at the press of a button were among the reasons the US government cited for creating the facility after the hostilities in Afghanistan began. This holding ground for alleged terrorists quickly drew fire for failing to grant the detainees prisoner-of-war status, which carries certain protections under the Geneva Conventions. At the same time, indefinitely held detainees haven't been granted trials or systematic access to lawyers able to review the evidence being used to hold them. In a growing number of cases, the US has had to release prisoners held for years after it became apparent they were being detained mistakenly.

Detractors, many of them in the Middle East, have accused America of hypocrisy by such practices, as well as interrogation techniques they term torture. Abraham says that the US was too quick to suspend "fundamental" constitutional rights, such as the habeas corpus right to know why you are being held.

"I as much as anyone appreciate the consequences of acts of terror," he says. "It's a very serious issue. But also a serious issue is how we and other democracies respond to it. Because there are people who are looking at terrorist acts and there are people that are looking at us as we respond to it. And so many people are looking for the opportunities for us to descend or separate ourselves from the principles of democracy, from our constitutional principles. And I think the moment that we do that, they perceive us as having inflicted a greater harm upon ourselves than could any terrorist."

Recently, the administration - nudged by a series of court verdicts questioning aspects of its Guantanamo policy - has acknowledged problems in running the detention camp, including public relations ones, and has begun to look at ways to close it down while still holding many of the prisoners somewhere else.

At a recent press briefing in Washington, Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes was questioned about Guantanamo, which was described by an Arab journalist as "destroying all these efforts" by America at winning over Muslim countries. She responded that "we are working to close Guantanamo... It's something that I would very much like and President [George W.] Bush would very much like to see - Guantanamo be able to be closed - because we recognize that it has become a negative symbol."

Abraham know that he was walking into a potential minefield when he was asked to help pass judgment on cases so scrutinized by the three branches of government. But he didn't know he would be pressured by superiors to find that those being held should be kept in custody, that lack of evidence meant the record should be culled once again for scraps of illegal activity. The mind-set, according to the lawyer, was one of guilty until proven innocent.

Once Abraham's affidavit entered the public sphere, the military initially argued that he hadn't seen enough of the proceedings to be able to speak authoritatively on what was going on, according to The Washington Post. In comments to the Associated Press, Pentagon spokesman, navy Lt.-Cmdr. Chito Peppler, said that "Lt.-Col. Abraham was not in a position to have a complete view of the CSRT."

Abraham acknowledges that he only sat on one CSRT, but suspects that's because his commanding officer didn't like his finding that the detainee should be let go. But he says another function was putting in order the records of all the detainees, so he was able to see all of the cases - and virtually every one suffered from the same flawed standards.

When The Jerusalem Post called Peppler and asked whether he could comment on issues connected to Abraham's statements, he said, "Not at this time" and hung up. He told other media, however, that military officials "disagree with [Abraham's] characterizations" and called the review process "fair, rigorous and robust." Pentagon officials have also been widely quoted as saying that the CSRTS "afford greater protections for wartime detainees than any nation has ever provided."

Defense sources also told The Washington Post that Abraham never reported his concerns to his superior, Rear-Adm. James McGarrah.

But Abraham says he repeatedly brought up his concerns - and that it was McGarrah who prompted him to speak out by offering his own affidavit that the procedures were carefully conceived.

Despite that impetus, Abraham got involved in the first place because his sister, also an attorney and an army reservist, happened to mention that her brother had served on a CSRT after the counsel for detainee Khaled al-Odah made a presentation at her law firm. They asked if he would submit an affidavit on their behalf, which he agreed to do.

He said that the principles he was raised with - both Jewish and American - convinced him it was the right thing to do. "I was raised with a fundamental appreciation of our rights and our liberties and the fact... you know, the Pledge of Allegiance, 'with liberty and justice for all,' no limitations there - it didn't say all citizens, or all men and women, or all people over a certain age."

He also reflects on the Constitution - its words and its connection to a heritage in line with Jewish values. "You think back to the Constitution and they're talking about 'secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.' I mean, it really is a heritage that we pass on and, as a Jew, I feel that so strongly because World War II deprived me of the opportunity to know half of my grandparents, to know so many members of my family. [It was] such an effort to extinguish that heritage." Fighting against that, he says, motivates much of what he does.

"The Constitution was written more than 200 years ago. They didn't write it for a generation. They didn't write it for a time. They assumed that in each generation there would be so much of merit in it, that each person would not only embrace it for themselves but for their posterity," he notes. "These are very Jewish ideals in the Constitution. I don't know how well that plays, but it is - it is the way that we are, it is the way that we treat others even if we are not treated that way."

Jews, he says, need to "appreciate these things in the context of very specific points in history when we were deprived of those rights and other rights, as in the expulsion of the Jews 400 years ago, our expulsion from Spain, our expulsion from England, our expulsion from every country.

"We cannot separate ourselves from this history. We shouldn't want to separate it ourselves from this history. I think it makes us appreciate it. I think it makes 'in our posterity,' that part of the preamble, really some of the most important words in the Constitution. That is what my parents instilled in me. I hope I have done and continue to do them credit by those lessons."

Iran's Jews Reject Cash Offer To Move To Israel

Taken from The Guardian, UK, July 12, 2007
By Robert Tait in Tehran

# Expats offer families £30,000 to emigrate
# Our identity is not for sale, say community leaders

Iran's Jews have given the country a loyalty pledge in the face of cash offers aimed at encouraging them to move to Israel, the arch-enemy of its Islamic rulers.

The incentives — ranging from £5,000 a person to £30,000 for families — were offered from a special fund established by wealthy expatriate Jews in an effort to prompt a mass migration to Israel from among Iran's 25,000-strong Jewish community. The offers were made with Israel's official blessing and were additional to the usual state packages it provides to Jews emigrating from the diaspora.

However, the Society of Iranian Jews dismissed them as "immature political enticements" and said their national identity was not for sale.

"The identity of Iranian Jews is not tradeable for any amount of money," the society said in a statement. "Iranian Jews are among the most ancient Iranians. Iran's Jews love their Iranian identity and their culture, so threats and this immature political enticement will not achieve their aim of wiping out the identity of Iranian Jews."

The Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv reported that the incentives had been doubled after earlier offers of £2,500 a head failed to attract any Iranian Jews to leave for Israel.

Iran's sole Jewish MP, Morris Motamed, said the offers were insulting and put the country's Jews under pressure to prove their loyalty.

"It suggests the Iranian Jew can be encouraged to emigrate by money," he said. "Iran's Jews have always been free to emigrate and three-quarters of them did so after the revolution but 70% of those went to America, not Israel."

Iran's Jewish population has dwindled from around 80,000 at the time of the 1979 Islamic revolution but remains the largest of any country in the Middle East apart from Israel. Jews have lived in Iran since at least 700BC.

Hostility between Iran's Islamic government and Israel means Iranian Jews are often subject to official mistrust and scrutiny. In 2000 10 Jews in the southern city of Shiraz were jailed for spying for Israel, which Iran refuses to recognise.

A Jewish businessman, Ruhollah Kadkhodah-Zadeh, was hanged in 1998, apparently for allegedly helping Jews to emigrate.

Jews generally avoid political controversy, but Mr Motamed wrote a letter of protest to Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, last year after he called the Holocaust "a myth". Mr Ahmadinejad had earlier said that Israel should be "wiped off the map".

Jews are free to practise their religion and have their own schools, although they are forced to open on Saturdays, the Jewish sabbath.

Despite the absence of diplomatic ties with Israel, Iranian Jews frequently go there to visit relatives.

'Jerusalem Not Holy To Muslims'

President of Zionist Organization of America: Palestinians 'not real people'

Taken from Ynet News, Isreal, 07.01.07, 10:47
By Yaakov Lappin

Jerusalem is "not holy to Muslims at all," the president of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), Morton Klein, told a Quebec synagogue congregation, the Canadian Jewish News (CJN) reported on Friday.

Klein said Jerusalem had never been important to Muslims, and that the Islamic claim on Jerusalem was designed "to take away our heart and our soul," the CJN said.

He added that Palestinians "have never been a real people because there was never an actual country called 'Palestine,'" the report added.

"He even accused Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of being willing to sell out Israel for the chance at 'peace,' when 'peace' has never been on Palestinian leaders' minds," CJN quoted Klein as saying.

Zionist leader slams U.S. Jewish organizations
By DAVID LAZARUS

MONTREAL - Contrary to what the world is constantly being told, Jerusalem is “not holy to Muslims at all,” never has been, and will be the Jewish people’s forever, a prominent American Jewish leader said here.

“They simply want to take away our heart and our soul,” said Morton Klein, 14-year president of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA).

The ZOA is one of the United States’ oldest – and most conservative – Israel advocacy organizations. Founded in 1897, it has been called one of Jewish America’s most credible voices by the Wall Street Journal and other newspapers.

Speaking just a few days before the 40th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification, Klein addressed an audience of 200 at the Beth Zion Congregation and lived up to his reputation for not mincing words.

Klein was unsparing and fiery in his criticism of other Jewish organizations for, in the ZOA’s view, pandering to politics instead of principles and for not challenging myths that are now taken as accepted truths.

Palestinians, for example, have never been a real people, he said, because there was never an actual country called “Palestine.”

He even accused Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of being willing to sell out Israel for the chance at “peace,” when “peace” has never been on Palestinian leaders’ minds.

During his speech, Klein held up an old front page of the New York Times from the date of the State of Israel’s creation in May 1948. The headline suggested there was hope for hostilities coming to an end eventually.

But it hasn’t and “nothing has changed since then,” he said.

He called Israel’s so-called ongoing “occupation” of land “one of the world’s great lies,” and said a different “value system” is why the mothers of suicide bombers rejoice in their own children’s demise.

Klein said he personally – but not the ZOA – would accept the concept of a “two-state” solution if he thought it would work.

“But it never will. They would only scream louder” with more demands, he said.

Klein was aghast that Olmert was ready to consider a Saudi Arabian plan for peace that would have Israel go back to the pre-1967 borders, resolve the refugee issue and have the Arab world accept Israel – all for the sake of a “peace” that would not come about anyway.

On the Jerusalem issue, Klein railed against the worldwide efforts to “de-Judaicize” the Jewish people’s holiest city and against American policy that identifies Jerusalem as a city of birth in U.S. passports without naming Israel as the country of birth (Canadian policy is the same for its passports).

“The ZOA is now suing the State Department over this,” he said.

It's wacko's like these that prevent peace in the Middle East. Worringly enough is that this jerk has a position on AIPAC and has influence on US foreign policy in the Middle East. Only last week President Bush met with Jewish organisations to discuss the situation after Hamas took control over Gazza - maybe he should've talked to Arab organisation, after all it's an Arab issue - maybe these arab groups do not provide enough political funds to the administration - maybe that is root of the the problems?

Argentine Jewry's Dark Secret

New book reveals story of Jewish association of pimps that operated in country in late 19th and early 20th century, and was involved in women trade and rape. 'This is a silenced story, ' author says, 'The Jewish community in Argentina remembers it well, but badly wants to keep it under wraps'

Taken from Ynet News, 25.05.07
By Rona Kupferboim

-Superintendent Julio Elsogray was a strange kind of Buenos Aires cop because he would not take bribes from the pimps who dominated the city in the early 20th century. Eventually, therefore, he was the man who managed to stop them. He did that thanks to a brave whore named Rachel Lieberman, who dared file a complaint against the Zwi Migdal Organization - an association of Jewish women traders.

Thus, in 1930 the two managed to shut down the only association of Jewish panders in the world after 60 years of activity. The Zwi Migdal group was an organization that traded in women while its members wore tefillin and built themselves a synagogue, and their story is both embarrassing and exciting. It involved loads of money, corrupt politicians, violent sex, international women trade, hard brutality, rape, and cheating, all lightly spiced with yiddishkeit and God-fearing traditions.

"This is a silenced story," said writer and poet Ilan Sheinfeld, whose book "The Tale of a Ring" relates the story of that dark period. "The Jewish community in Argentina remembers it well, but badly wants to keep it under wraps because it is a disgrace. There is very little material in Hebrew about this affair."

Intermittently researching his book for 11 years, Sheinfeld traveled to Buenos Aires twice, learned Spanish, and "established ties with Argentinean Jews who knew about the story. I had to peel off layer after layer, convince people to talk, and obtain materials. When you closely examine the affair, you can tell why it was kept secret so far."

Remonta - Fresh flesh shipment
Argentina of the second half of the 19th century was an attractive destination for Jews who fled Russian and Polish pogroms and poverty, headed for the New World. In those decades, Buenos Aires grew rapidly and with it, the Jewish community. A Hevra Kadisha was established and a newspaper named Mundo Israelita was published as the Jewish community members strove to settle down and become part of the new place. They wished to establish themselves as law-abiding and moral people.

This, however, did not apply to all of the Jews. Hundreds of Jewish immigrants chose a different path and became rufianos - pimps, prostitution peddlers. Given that at the time, there was one woman for 10 men, sexual services were in high demand. The temptation to make a profit in this area was plain to see. So the Jewish rufianos stepped in, supplied the demand, and soon enough seized control over the entire prostitution business in Argentina.

"Jews were very prominent among women traders, both as dealers and as employers of prostitutes, particularly in Argentina, Brazil, Poland, and Galicia (Russia)," wrote Yehuda Rimerman in "Prostitution and the Deviant Girl," a book that reviews the history of Jewish prostitution in the modern era. The Argentinean pimps created a total, most effective world, with predefined codewords, rules, and methods of operation. For example, a trip abroad to bring a new shipload of fresh girls was called remonta, a term taken from the horse market.

Here is how it worked: A well-mannered and elegant man would appear one day in a Jewish shtetl in Poland or Russia. He notified the local community and posted an ad in the shul saying he was looking for nice young women to work in the houses of rich Jews in Argentina or even marry them. Despairing with the pogroms and dreadful economic situation, the girls' parents would respond favorably and give their daughters away, hoping to give them a new start.

The girls, mostly aged 13 to 16, packed a small bag, bid their families a sobbing farewell, and boarded the ships to Argentina accompanied by a stranger, certain they are off to a better future. Their training period often started on the way there, on the ship, and was always a cruel and brutal affair. The young virgins were broken in - raped, beaten, starved, and locked in cages. Some of them were married off to local men so that they could obtain entry visas. Far from their families, without friends or knowledge of the language, they started serving men, their bodies belonging to the Jewish rufianos.

A cemetery fit for pimps
The largest bordellos of Buenos Aires housed 60 to 80 sex slaves. There were bordellos all over Argentina, but most of them were in the big city, in the Jewish quarter, on Junin Street.

Yet, as the whorehoses and pimps prospered, the Jewish community rejected them. Articles in the local press condemned them and, in 1885, the community established a Jewish Association for the Protection of Women and Girls. Ads posted on the walls in the Jewish quarter called on the locals not to rent their shops to the rufianos. On their part, the pimps very much wanted to be part of the community. The wealthiest among them used to pick a new girl every night and take her out to the theater, "which was the center of cultural life in the city. Jewish theater was very successful then," Sheinfeld said.

"The Jewish communities used to throw fund-raising parties, importing European star performers. The pimps would show up every night because they intended to show off their merchandise, wished to maintain their status, and also wanted be like everybody else. This is why they made donations, which made the community deliberate whether it wanted their money. On the one hand, the community needed money to build public buildings, but on the other hand, it was 'dirty' money and by taking it they feared they would be legitimizing or tacitly accepting the criminals' exploitation of women. This ended one night when Nahum Sorkin, a well-known Zionist activist, stood outside the theater and physically stopped the rufianos from entering. Next, they were banned from the synagogues, and to top it all, they were refused burial in the Jewish cemetery.

This was too much for the rufianos. It is one thing to be banned from the theater or community balls, but eternal rest is a different story. They formed an association of charity among its members. On 7 May 1906, when there were already half a million Jews in Argentina, the Jewish pimps registered legally as the Zwi Migdal Association, named after one of its greatest contributors. Naturally, the group later split and the splinter, led by Simon Rubinstein, established its own society named Ashkenazum. Once officially recognized, both associations bought plots of land on the outskirt of Buenos Aires and established their own cemeteries there.

The Zwi Migdal Organization reached its peak in the 1920's, when some 430 rufianos controlled 2,000 whorehouses with 4,000 women. The network was well organized and its members cooperated closely to protect their interests. Prostitutes that failed to satisfy their clients were beaten, fined, or taken to work in provincial houses. Every business transaction was logged. The rufianos even held a meat market where newly arrived girls were paraded naked in front of traders in places such as Hotel Palestina or Cafe Parisienne. These activities went on undisturbed because they were frequented by government officials, judges, and reporters. City officials, politicians, and police officers were paid off. The pimps had powerful connections everywhere.

The hijo de puta judge
The rufianos' audacity eventually led to their demise. It happened when they refused to forgo their income from the work of one woman, Rachel Lieberman from Lódž, Poland. She, like so many others, was tempted to travel to Buenos Aires answering a matrimonial ad, but was taken to Jonin Street where she was forced to prostitute. In desperation, she contacted Superintendent Julio Elsogray. She heard his name mentioned on the street as one who would not take Zwi Migdal's money and was actually looking for ways to destroy the organization. She slipped into his office one day and gave a detailed account of the connections among the various pimps in the organization management. Her testimony was reason enough to launch an extensive investigation. This time, unlike on previous occasions that led to nothing, the findings reached Dr. Rodriguez Ocampo, a judge who would not take Zwi Migdal bribes either.

The lengthy trial ended in September 1930, with 108 detainees. "The very existence of the Zwi Migdal Organization directly threatens our society," the judge wrote in his verdict, handing down long prison terms. Nevertheless, while in prison, the pimps pulled some old strings, appealed their sentences in January 1931, and senior Justice Ministry officials left only three of the convicts in jail, discharging the rest. When the media reported this, the public was very upset and pressured the authorities to reverse the discharge decision. Thereafter, hundred of pimps were deported to Uruguay. "Over the years, they slowly returned one by one, but the era of the huge brothels ended," Sheinfeld summed up this story.

Israel 'Shocked' As Vatican Boycotts Holocaust Memorial Service

Taken from The Times, 12/04/2007
By Richard Owen

Israel expressed “shock” today at the Vatican’s decision to boycott a ceremony at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, this weekend because of an exhibit accusing Pius XII, the wartime pontiff, of turning a blind eye to the Nazi extermination of the Jews.

Monsignor Antonio Franco, the papal nuncio (ambassador) in Israel, said he would refuse to participate in the annual memorial service for the victims of the Holocaust at Yad Vashem as long as the museum continued to display a photograph of Pius XII with a caption saying he had “recognised” the Nazi regime and done nothing to condemn the Shoah, or Holocaust.

“I do not intend to go to Yad Vashem if things remain as they are,” Monsignor Franco said. The photograph and caption first appeared two years ago. He said Israel had rejected repeated Vatican requests for them to be removed.

Pius XII (reigned 1939-1958), who before being elected Pope was nuncio in Berlin and then Secretary of State (Vatican Prime Minister), has long been accused by Jewish groups of “German sympathies”. A biography by the Roman Catholic author John Cornwell described him as “Hitler’s Pope”.

The Vatican, which has begun proceedings to have Pius XII beatified - a step toward sainthood - insists that Pius XII helped thousands of Jews to escape during the Nazi occupation of Rome, and that if he had spoken out it would have made matters worse for Jews in Germany itself.

Iris Rosenberg, of the Yad Vashem museum, said this would mark the first time a foreign ambassador had bocotted the ceremony. “We are shocked and disappointed that the Vatican’s delegate to Israel has chosen not to respect the memory of the Holocaust and not to participate in the official ceremony in which the state of Israel and the Jewish people join in memory of the victims,” she said.

She said the museum “would continue to present the historical truth on Pius XII as it is known to scholars today.” Jewish historians complain that although the Vatican has opened up its archives on Pius XII’s record before he became Pope, papers relating to his pontificate remain inaccessible.

Monsignor Franco however said in a letter to Yad Vashem that he found the Pius XII caption offensive to Catholics. “I respect the memory of the martyrs of the Holocaust but also the memory of the Pope,” he said.

“The right of one does not infringe on the right of the other.” He said Pius XII had done “nothing to be ashamed of”.

Tzipi Livni, the Israeli Foreign Minister, said the Yad Vashem ceremony “honours the victims of the most traumatic event in the history of the Jewish people and one of the most traumatic in the history of humanity”. Whether envoys attended it was “a matter for their consciences”.

German Neo-Nazi Fear Over Police Cadets

Taken from The Times, UK, March 23, 2007
By Roger Boyes in Berlin

Fears that the German police force contains neo-Nazi sympathisers have been sparked after disdainful cadets delivered an extraordinary rebuff to a Holocaust survivor.

Students at the Berlin police academy refused to listen to the harrowing testimony of Isaak Behar, 83, who had been invited to lecture them on his experiences as a Jew in the Third Reich. Mr Behar lost his parents and his two sisters in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The cadets shouted that they did not want to hear about the Holocaust any more, and said that the Jewish community was emotionally blackmailing Germany, according to German press reports. Dieter Glietsch, Berlin’s police commissioner, has opened an investigation.

German police officers are given compulsory Holocaust-awareness training. Visits to sites where Nazis murdered or deported Jews are part of the curriculum. Mr Behar and other Jewish survivors frequently lecture at police and army colleges. “There have always been antiSemitic incidents in the army as well as the police,” said Mr Behar. “But senior officers take action when they hear of them.”

This episode, though, which occurred on Feb 27, is seen as part of a broader and more menacing trend. Last month it was revealed that at least three police bodyguards assigned to protect Michael Friedman, a leading Jewish activist, were neo-Nazi sympathisers.

One dressed in his free time in a black SS uniform and put photographs of himself on the internet. Another printed out a fake certificate declaring himself to be a member of the SS “M.F” Division — M.F. being the intitals of Michael Friedman, who was for many years the deputy chairman of the German Jewish community. The wording of the certificate began: “In the Name of the Föhrer . . .” mimicking a genuine SS document.

Yet another police guard stored the Nazi anthem, the Horst Wessel song, on his computer and played it out loud when colleagues were in the room. The policemen claimed that they were no more than harmless pranks.

But Mr Friedman, who has received many death threats because of his vociferous support for Jewish causes, is taking the case seriously. He has demanded a parliamentary inquiry from the state of Hesse, which is responsible for protecting him. According to the mass circulation newspaper Bild, one of the investigated bodguards threatened “to spill the beans about far-right activity at Frankfurt police headquarters” if charges were pressed against him.

The bodyguards have been suspended from duty. The German press and Police Workers’ Association have called for their dismissal from the force.

“These incidents show that far-right thinking is now anchored in the mainstream of German society,” said Mr Friedman, “and it is increasingly obvious in the police force”.

That sentiment was echoed by Andreas Nachama, a leading rabbi. “This antisemitism is appearing everywhere and it is as threatening as it is reprehensible.”

Insiders say that police antisemitism is usually more discreet, confined to comments at the police station after a stint of duty.

The guarding of Jewish sites, from synagogues to the Jewish Museum in Berlin, is particularly unpopular among the police rank-and-file. Their task is to head off neo-Nazi attacks or report antisemitic symbols daubed on buildings overnight.

Hate crimes
# Displaying Nazi symbols and the production of pro-Nazi materials is illegal in Germany
# Overt support for neo-Nazi groups rose after reunification of East and West Germany, with attacks on immigrant communities
# Four men linked to neo-Nazi groups firebombed a house of Turkish immigrants in Solingen in 1993, killing five
# Marius Schoeberl, 16, was murdered in 2002 by three youths in East Germany because he looked Jewish
# Support is growing for the German far-right National Democratic Party

---------------------------------------------------------------
The consensus is that young Germans are fed up with having the Holocaust shoved down their throats and can you blame them? Whilst we should never forget the evils of the Holocaust - the new generation of Germans need to be given a fresh chance without the constant reminders of what their grandfathers did nor should they take responsibly for their actions. What would help is if Germany paid back what it stole from the Jews that lived in Germany and compensated the Jewish families. To this date there are many Jews still waiting to be compensated but are being ignored by the German government. The German chancellor is a joke, possibly one of the worst female leaders in the world. Incidentally, she is to receive an honorary doctorate of philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem next month. Apparently she is to be honored by the university in recognition of her lifelong dedication to the principles of democracy and in appreciation of her warm and constant friendship for the people and State of Israel. It is more likely she is getting her degree for supplying Israel with two free nuclear submarines as well as various reduced rate arsenal. If she was going to be an advocate for democracy then she would’ve done justice to the plight of the Palestinians living in the occupied territories as well as those living in Israel and the refugees who want to return currently living outside Israel.

NBC Slammed For 'Anti-Semitic' TV Show

Taken from The Jerusalem Post, Mar. 10, 2007
By MICHAEL FREUND

A popular US television series is coming under fire after a recent episode portrayed Israel in a harsh light and appeared to promote anti-Semitic stereotypes of Jews as disloyal citizens.

The plot line of the February 27 installment of Law and Order: Criminal Intent, a fictional police drama broadcast across America on NBC, centers on a journalist who is poisoned after his girlfriend uncovers a foul-up by Israeli intelligence.

The show depicts Israeli bulldozers destroying Palestinian schools, with at least one character referring to "Israeli brutality."

It also includes a Jewish police captain who agrees to cover up for Israel by shutting down a criminal investigation at the urging of the head of the local pro-Israel group.

In one scene, after Captain Danny Ross tells his officers to halt their investigation, Detective Mike Logan confronts him and asks, "Are you a Jew first and a cop second?"

After the episode was broadcast, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) launched an e-mail campaign urging people to protest to NBC over the content of the program.

In a report appearing on the group's Web site, CAMERA noted that, "Damaging misinformation is being conveyed about Israel not just in news stories, but in popular culture items as well."

Asserting that the episode "fosters negative stereotypes of Jews as disloyal Americans and Israelis as brutes who demolish Palestinian schools and kill innocent civilians," CAMERA said that, "during this time of escalating anti-Semitism and anti-Israel animus, the show's executives have shown extremely poor judgment to promote such an anti-Jewish, anti-Israel storyline." The group encouraged people to write to NBC President Jeff Zucker, as well as the program's executive producers, to voice their concerns over its content.

Contacted by The Jerusalem Post, NBC sent a statement via e-mail, which said, "As you know, the program material on Law & Order: CI has traditionally addressed provocative, contemporary issues. Its 'ripped from the headlines' stories often spark debate on many controversial subjects. As noted on air, the program is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event."

An NBC spokesman declined to respond to questions concerning allegations of anti-Semitism in the show's dialogue and plot.

There are two brilliant responses to this article as published in the The Jerusalem Post Talkback section:

(1) 124. Criticism of Israel is no anti-semitism. - By HN, 03/13/2007 05:36
Depicting house demolisions by Israel's occupation is no act of anti-semitism, only a reflection of the reality that exists thanks to the decisions of the people who run Israel's occupation. Anti-semitism is NOT (as CAMERA says) on the rise, the only thing on the rise is criticism of Israel's crimes against humanity and CAMERA can rest assured that the voices that speak against the occupation they try to apologize for will not be silenced nor intimidated.

(2) 121. Sounds like reality TV to me - By Grif - USA, 03/12/2007 09:56
Israelis bulldozing Palestinian property? Killing innocent civilians? Assassinations and cover-ups? All they're missing is an Israeli diplomat discovered tied up, drunk and naked, with sex toys in his hands. Sounds like they took the script straight out of the Israeli newspapers.

Jewish Groups Do Their Best To Avoid The Iraq War

Taken from The Jerusalem Post, Mar. 21, 2007
RON KAMPEAS / JTA

Abortion? Check.
Condoms? Got 'em. T
axes? We're there.
War? Don't mention it.

The organizational Jewish community, out front on most front-line political issues, has maintained a careful distance from the Iraq war since its inception.

The main reason is a wish to avoid displeasing the Bush administration, which has offered unprecedented support for Israel and is leading the effort to force Iran to halt its suspected nuclear-weapons program.

"It's a case of American Jews saying thank you for your support of Israel," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League.

"If we want to be tough on Iran, we can't tie his hands on Iraq," he said, referring to President Bush.

As the war passed its fourth year Monday, grassroots pressure was mounting against a conflict that is profoundly unpopular - especially among Jews

The results of that pressure are evident in the Reform and Reconstructionist movements. Last week, the Union of Reform Judaism's executive committee demanded a timetable for a troop withdrawal from Iraq and opposed the "surge," the administration's deployment of an additional 30,000 troops.

The same week, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association called for a "rapid and responsible" troop withdrawal.

An aggregate of recent Gallup Polls shows that Jews and black Protestants are likelier than other religious groups to believe the war was a mistake, with opposition running at 77 percent. The polls have ratcheted up the pressure to call Jewish organizations to account.

"Every day the official Jewish institutions delay bringing their moral and political clout to bear means some delay in getting Congress to end the war," Rabbi Arthur Waskow, who heads the Shalom Center in Philadelphia, wrote in a recent Op-Ed for JTA.

The polls also spurred the formation of a new Jewish group. Jews Against the War was launched Monday by a number of Jewish studies scholars.

"Like the prophets of Israel, I can no longer take the 'safe' road," Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater of the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center in California said in the group's opening statement. "This war is wrong and it needs to end."

No major Jewish group ever explicitly endorsed the war, but a number made it clear that they were not opposed to an effort that would unseat Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi president launched unprovoked missile attacks at Israel during the 1991 Persian Gulf War and funded anti-Israel terrorism.

Iraq is "the most clear and present danger to democracy and freedom," Foxman said after Bush outlined his case for military action to the United Nations in September 2002.

Polls at that time showed that a majority of American Jews - like the rest of the country - believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

Differences between US Jews and their organizational leaders emerged after the case for war began to unravel as the WMD intelligence proved faulty. By the beginning of 2004, polls showed a majority of US Jews were against the war.

Yet organizational support for the administration's efforts continued - not in explicit expressions, but in subtle nods of approval.

The American Jewish Committee wrote Bush in December 2005, congratulating him on successful elections in Iraq. The letter was released, coincidentally or not, just as the AJCommittee published an annual poll of Jewish voters that showed opposition to the war.

AJCommittee spokesmen did not reply to JTA requests for comment.

The Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish American Organizations also did not explicitly support the war, but its popular Daily Alert e-mail linked overwhelmingly to arguments in favor.

Malcolm Hoenlein, the conference's executive vice-chairman, said an umbrella group that must achieve consensus among more than 50 groups has to tread with care.

"We just have to be thoughtful about adopting positions," he said. "You don't adopt positions because of a poll - everything is nuanced. These are complicated issues."

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee also avoided backing the war, but at its May 2004 policy conference, 6,000 delegates loudly cheered President Bush, who focused his keynote speech on his case for war.

The Reform movement rolled around to a resolution broadly opposing the war at its biennial convention in fall 2005. That's not untypical of a movement that prefers the slow, upward churn of grassroots pressure over hasty decisions announced by leadership, said Rabbi David Saperstein, who directs the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington.

But those who continue to support a U.S. military presence in Iraq say the grassroots may not be the most reliable route of arriving at policy.

"The model of leadership is not what the grassroots want," said Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition. "This is a time for people who should know what's at risk and what's at stake and not give in to the prevailing political winds. It sends the wrong message to men in uniform. It sends a white flag to our friends and allies around the world."

The broader silence on the war is unusual for a Jewish community that's not afraid to tackle controversy. Last year, for instance, Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women led efforts to knock back state-level measures that would have further restricted abortion and embryonic stem-cell research.

This year, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the consensus-driven public relations arm of the Jewish community, took on handgun violence and efforts to stymie gay marriage. It also came out against some tax cuts, a third rail in the donor-driven non-profit world.

This week, NCJW is lobbying for federal funding of sex education that goes beyond abstinence and teaches safe-sex techniques.

But none of those organizations has adopted resolutions addressing the Iraq war.

One element frustrating opposition to the war is that it's not so simple to come up with alternatives, said Rabbi Steve Gutow, JCPA's executive director.

"No one wants it to go on, but how do you end it? It's a hard question," Gutow said.

Reluctance also may stem from the canard that Jews get others to fight their wars.

Professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt last year blamed the pro-Israel lobby for driving the Iraq war even though no pro-Israel organization had made it a priority and some - like the Reform movement - oppose it outright.

Foxman said the Walt-Mearsheimer fallout was inhibiting Jewish activism in favor of confronting Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program, a cause that has broad support in the Jewish community.

"That is one factor why there's silence, not wanting to be blamed for this war and maybe for Iran," Foxman said.

But the role the Iraq quagmire has played in emboldening Iran may help turn the organizational tide against the war.

"I believe it's had a negative impact on Israel," Wendy Wallach Pelucia of Greater Danbury, Conn., a delegate to NCJW's national conference in Washington this week, said of the Iraq war.
Pelucia said she was gratified the Reform movement had come out for withdrawal but added, "I would have liked to have been out of Iraq a long time ago."

Vice President Dick Cheney made the case for the Iraq war at this year's AIPAC conference, but in contrast to the reception for Bush three years ago, applause was moderate.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), a Democratic candidate for president in 2008, earned applause a few weeks earlier when he told an AIPAC audience in Chicago that he would withdraw troops.

David Elcott, executive director of the Israel Policy Forum, made the case at this year's JCPA plenum that the failure to speak out on Iraq and other topics could alienate younger Jews.

"While Jews are prepared historically to fight, they want to know their leaders are looking for alternatives," he told JTA. "It's the same questioning of American Jewish leaders: Have we done everything possible?"

The failure to speak out against Iraq has led to the establishment of at least one Jewish group that opposes military action against Iran.

"Most of us accurately predicted the consequences of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and warned politicians and the public about predictable, preventable unintended consequences," said the open letter to AIPAC last month from a group of academics calling themselves Jewish Analysts Investigating Peace and Conflict. "We are unanimous now in predicting the dangers for Jews, Israel, the US, and efforts to reduce global terrorism that would be triggered by any military action against Iran."

Extract from above article:
Pastor John Hagee along with Dick Cheney addressed AIPAC: "The sleeping giant of Christian Zionism has awoken!" Hagee proclaimed, taking the microphone at the opening dinner reception on Sunday. The electrified crowd - most of it Jewish - roared in support, pounding on the tables. Hagee went on to declare the United Nations a "political brothel" and asserted that Israel must never give up land. He agreed with Israeli writer Dore Gold that granting part of Jerusalem to the Palestinians would be "tantamount to turning it over to the Taliban." And, after rebuking Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he led the crowd in a chant of "Israel lives!" urging them to "shout it from the mountaintops!"

Uncovered: Churchill's Warnings About The 'Hebrew Bloodsuckers'

Unpublished article from 1937 suggests 'aloof' Jews to blame for antagonism towards them

Taken from the Independent, UK, 11 March 2007
By Paul Bignell

Winston Churchill suggested Jewish people were "partly responsible for the antagonism" that saw them branded "Hebrew bloodsuckers", according to an article made public for the first time today.

The 1937 document, "How the Jews Can Combat Persecution", was unearthed by Dr Richard Toye, a Cambridge University historian. Written three years before Churchill became Prime Minister, the article has apparently lain unnoticed in the Churchill archives at Cambridge since the early months of the Second World War.

The article argues that "the wickedness of the persecutors" was not the sole reason for the ill-treatment of Jews down the ages. Churchill criticised the "aloofness" of Jewish people from wider society and urged them to make the effort to integrate themselves."

Dr Toye said: "I nearly fell off my chair when I found the article. It appears to have been overlooked. I think a lot of people thought that the file it was in only contained copies of articles that had already been published. It was certainly quite a shock to read some of these things and it is obviously at odds with the traditional idea we have of Churchill."

The article was intended for the US publication Liberty but withdrawn when another magazine Churchill wrote for objected to him supplying a rival.

In the piece Churchill criticised Jewish employers in the clothing trade and their use of sweated labour. Because refugee Jews escaping the Nazi regime in Germany were willing to work for lower wages, this was in his view "bad citizenship" because it forced English workers out of jobs - and "bad policy" as it created anti-Semitism. Churchill says: "The central fact which dominates the relations of Jew and non-Jew is that the Jew is 'different'. He looks different. He thinks differently. He has a different tradition and background."

He then goes on to criticise Jewish moneylenders: "Every Jewish moneylender recalls Shylock and the idea of the Jews as usurers. And you cannot reasonably expect a struggling clerk or shopkeeper, paying 40 or 50 per cent interest on borrowed money to a 'Hebrew Bloodsucker', to reflect that almost every other way of life was closed to the Jewish people."

Elsewhere in the article Churchill is sympathetic towards Jewish people and clearly disapproves of their persecution: "The Jew is, as a rule, a good citizen. He is sober, industrious and law-abiding... The Jews are suffering from persecutions, cruel and relentless."

Dr Toye said: "Although Churchill lapsed into some extremely unfortunate stereotypes, he did so in the context of trying to be helpful - trying to help the Jews avoid persecution. But unfortunately he kind of blames the Jews themselves in part."

However, Sir Martin Gilbert, Churchill's biogra-pher, says there is another reason for the anti-Semitic language: "Churchill had a ghostwriter who was a member of the Mosleyite party. This article was the only serious subject the ghostwriter was asked to tackle, in which he went over the top in the use of his language."

Limit Muslim Migration, Australia Warned

Taken from The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia, February 16, 2007
Barney Zwartz

LIFE can become untenable when the Muslim population of a non-Muslim country reaches about 10 per cent, as shown by France, a Jewish expert on Islam says.

The Australian Jewish News yesterday quoted Raphael Israeli as saying Australia should cap Muslim immigration or risk being swamped by Indonesians.

Professor Israeli told the Herald that was a misunderstanding. But he said: "When the Muslim population gets to a critical mass you have problems. That is a general rule, so if it applies everywhere it applies in Australia."

Professor Israeli, an expert on Islamic history from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, has been brought to Australia by the Shalom Institute of the University of NSW. The Australia-Israel Jewish Affairs Council is co-hosting many of his activities.

He said Muslim immigrants had a reputation for manipulating the values of Western countries, taking advantage of their hospitality and tolerance.

"Greeks or Italians or Jews don't use violence. There is no Italian or Jewish Hilaly [a reference to the controversial cleric Sheik Taj el-Din al Hilaly of Lakemba mosque]. Why?"

Professor Israeli said that when the Muslim population increased, so did the risk of violence.

"Where there are large Muslim populations who are prepared to use violence you are in trouble.

If there is only 1 or 2 per cent they don't dare to do it - they don't have the backing of big communities. They know they are drowned in the environment of non-Muslims and are better behaved."

In Australia, Muslims account for about 1.5 per cent of the population.

Professor Israeli said that in France, which has the highest proportion of Muslims in Europe at about 10 per cent, it was already too late. There were regions even the police were scared to enter, and militant Muslims were changing the country's political, economic and cultural fabric, and demanding anti-Semitic and anti-Israel policies.

"French people say they are strangers in their own country. This is a point of no return.

"If you are on a collision course, what can you do? You can't put them all in prison, and anyway they are not all violent. You can't send them all back. You are really in trouble. It's irreversible."

Professor Israeli said that in Australia a few imams had preached violence. "You should not let fundamentalist imams come here. Screen them 1000 times before they are admitted, and after they are admitted screen what they say in the mosque."

He said some Muslims wanted to impose sharia (Islamic law) in their adopted countries, and when propaganda did not work they turned to intimidation.

Professor Israeli said his task was to describe, not prescribe. He also said his warning did not include immigrants, including Muslims, who simply wanted to improve their lot. As long as they respected the law and democracy, their numbers — Buddhist, Muslim or Jew — were immaterial. It became material when a group accepted violence.

"The trains in London and Madrid were not blown up by Christians or Buddhists but by Muslims, so it is them we have to beware," he said.

Keysar Trad, of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, said "Not only religious clerics need to be screened before entering Ausralia but also academics … this type of academic does nothing but create hatred, suspicion and division … We should review not only what the man has said but also those who have sponsored him, to see if they endorse those comments."

War in the Middle East – What is the solution?

The Balfour Declaration of 1917 has caused a regrettable mess in the Middle East. Since the paper was introduced and approved by the British Government we have seen the creation of Israel in Palestine (against the wishes of the local Palestinians & surrounding Arab countries).

It can be argued that Israel was created by the European and American Governments as a way of apologising to the Jewish Community for their failure to protect them during the world wars. But for many countries it was also a way of shifting these communities (from their respective countries) to the Middle East.

Other will argue that Israel was created as a way of controlling the Middle East. Western governments of the UK and United States have financed Israel to keep control of the region. It is important for the UK & US to have a stable region for Economic benefits.

Israel became the homeland of many Jews from the first wave of migration starting in 1881 to followed by migration of Holocaust survivors then followed general migration of Jews wishing to retire & settle in Israel. The population of Israel grew and many non-Jews (Muslims, Christians & others) had been forced out of the major cities like Jerusalem and many have been kicked out of the country.

Land gained from the Arab-Isralie wars have been used by developers to house the mass-immigration of American & Eastern Eurpean Jews.Today we have fighting all over the region. Various fractions of arab groups (labled Terrorists) have attacked Israel and Israeli army have done vice versa with more aggression. We tend to forget that the so called good guys (Israel) as labelled by Western Governments are not as clean as people think they are.

Little information of their terreroit past & present have been published in the western world or even condemmed by western governments. We tend to forget the hanging of the British sergents and officers by the Israelis as well as the killing of 34 American Serviceman of the USS Liberty by Israeli airforce.

Western governments turned a blind eye to Jewist terrorist activities including bombing of various Arab markets and cafes which killed many civilians, including women and children and the taking up of Palestinian homes, land and possessions.

We also forget that during the 80’s Israel supported the apartheid government of South Africa. Arms were sold to the South African Army. Israel also helped develop & enhanced the South African army with military training. Israel also helped South Africa develop Nuclear Technology.

Israel’s enemy are mainly groups like Hezbollah & Hamas. The South Africans were fighting the ANC (whose members included the likes of Nelson Mandella). It is ironic how yeterdays terrorists have become todays freedom fighters. Maybe leaders of Hezbollah & Hamas will be seen as freedom fighters in the future?

In acts of war there can be no winners. Hezbollah & Hamas have done damage to Isralies and Israel has retaliated against the Paliestinians and their neighbouring countries. If a war broke out by all Arab countries they will stand no chance against the might of Israel.

So how can we settle the situation, are there any solutions?

(1) Israel holds the key, they have the power. Arab extremists will never be happy until they reclaim their land including east Jerusalem. Israeli extremists will never be happy until they own all of Palestine.

(2) The solution would be for Israel to move back to the 1967 border. It would also help if they stopped stalling peace talks and stopped plans to expand its settlements.

(3) Western government (particularly United States) should stop the continued funding of Israel and use their might to force all parties to accept peace in the region. Israel is out of control. It knows that the United Nations is weak and ineffective and any action it takes against its enemies will not be condemned by western governments or western media.

If nothing is done I fear continued retaliation from Islamic extremists throughout the world and everyone (not just Israel) will suffer.
