UK: City Analyst 'Fired For Exposing Racism'

Taken from The London Metro, Tuesday, April 17, 2007

A City analyst who claims he was fired for exposing racist bullying at the world's largest financial services company is suing for £500,000 damages.

Stephen Webster said he was axed from a £108,000-a-year post as head of AIG's European equities research team after complaining about fellow manager Chantal Brennan.

He told an employment tribunal Ms Brennan reduced a black woman to tears and routinely taunted junior analyst Fadil Dookhy about his Muslim faith.

Ms Brennan, who is Irish, accused Mr Dookhy of being a 'major freak' for his halal diet and mocked him for not drinking alcohol, Mr Webster alleged.

She also asked one Asian colleague if he was going to start a jihad and referred to another as 'Taliban' as well as talking about 'Paki shopkeepers', he added.

Mr Webster said he reported Ms Brennan to senior managers in May 2003 for racist bullying but they fired Mr Dookhy for gross misconduct.

After Mr Dookhy's dismissal, executives turned their attention to Mr Webster and sacked him last year.

The 43-year-old, of St Albans, Hertfordshire, is claiming £500,000 damages for racial victimisation.

AIG insists he was 'rightly dismissed for poor performance' and says his sacking was unconnected to his complaints of racism. The case continues at Stratford, London.

Banking & Finance is a male dominated industry and have a habit of bullying against employees from small minorities. In the past The City of London has paid out huge amounts of money in compensation to some of their employees that include women (who are underpaid compared to men, or paid less bonuses) or discriminated because they had babies, black people, Muslims because they were different and had a different culture from the laddish culture of "city" workers. Lets hope justice is done in this case.
